The Universe is Messing With Me

Whenever I had a zit or a canker sore, my mom used to say it was the meanness coming out in me(no wonder I'm so screwed up!)  Not only did I feel self conscious about whatever was showing on my face, I also felt guilty.  It was my mom's version of karma.  Or perhaps karma with a side of guilt.

I have had issues with eczema on my face in the past year or two.  It has been very confidence inspiring to go on an interview when I feel like a neon arrow is pointing directly to a zit, rash, or in yesterday's case a bizarre looking rash(for lack of a better word) on the edge of my nose and just inside it.

I thought it was a nose zit.  Most of us know how enjoyable those can be. Opus was right about nose zits.

My eczema has mostly cleared but there is a slight lingering issue just inside the lower part of my nares.

It looks like a zit run amok or impetigo or cancer(gotta add the skin cancer scare tactic).  I must have been pretty darn mean recently.

This morning I woke up with what may be pink eye and some weird white bump on the top of my left eyelid.  Seeing this new addition to my face made me groan and giggle at the same time.

It is ridiculous.  Just plain silly unusual looking things keep popping up on my face.  I thought I got over  unusual looking things popping up overnight on my face at the age of 20. HA!

The universe is messing with my head!  Tell me who, what, how I pissed off the karma overseers and I will  sincerely apologize.

Baffled and slightly amused, I'm undecided whether to curse karma or suck up and make nice so my face will clear up!!!

Any thoughts?

Keep Your Mouth Shut!!

I talk too much.

Yeah, I know you're super surprised by this fact. (rolling my eyes)

I have an interview in a few hours for a job I don't want but I do need.

My knowledge, coming from the past 2 years in particular, tells me my best bet is to:

1)  KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT!!!!

Discretion is the better part of valor
this was said by some wise soul.

2)  Never volunteer information in an interview

3)  Shut up.

4)  Pause, yet look calm, when a question catches you by surprise

5)  Shut up

6)  Answer question succinctly.

7)  Small talk has no place in an interview

8)  Shut up

9)  Research the company before the interview

10) Shut up

I WANT MY MOMMY!!!!!!!!

I want my Mommy who would rub my back because I'm not feeling well.  My Mommy would rub my back until I feel asleep.  I wish my spouse could comprehend nurturing, but he is incapable.

I want my Mommy to make me chicken soup and to rub the right side of my neck which is achy.

I want my Mommy to dry my eyes, not to ask "Why the hell are you crying?'.  I just want her to dry my tears, even if they're silly, and to tell tell me everything will be ok.  My Mommy knew how to handle tears!  Gee fool, I'm crying because I feel crummy and because I'm getting old and I hate it, because sometimes it just feels better to cry.

I want my Mommy to make me cherry jello without having to be asked and without getting all annoyed.  My Mommy knew when the time for J-E-L-L-O was and she never acted like martyr when she brought it to her sick little girl.

If my Mommy were here, she'd hug me without having to be asked.  She'd just do it.  She'd ask if I need a book to color.  She'd bring me ginger ale.  She'd make me toast with a teensy bit of butter.

I really really really want my Mommy back and alive!!!!

And here beside me, not just forever in my heart.

(I'm sitting here crying my eyes out because I miss my Mommy.  Yes people still miss their mommies at the  age of 48, maybe because I miss being taken care of selflessly.  I don't have a 'reason" to cry.  I just am.)

Feeling Bad

For some reason(no there's no possible way I could be pregnant) I've been feeling nauseous.

I hate feeling sick.  It's always fun to be feeling this bad when no one in your house knows or cares or nurture.  The dog is just wondering why I won't chase him and play tug of war.

I told my spouse I had been feeling unwell all day.

Three hours later, he's like what's your problem? (duh)

I am trying hard not to hurl but if I have to throw up I'm aiming in his direction!

Things I wouldn't Mind Getting Back

1. My perky breasts

2. My lovely thick hair

3. My stretchmarkless tummy

4. My almost flat tummy

5. My never cracked heels

6. My ability to swim a mile without stopping

7. My cute butt from all that swimming ;)

8. My unfreckled/unmoled skin

9. My killer legs(I also took dance class)

10. My witty ability to flirt shamelessly

11. My thighs which did not touch(until I was preggo with kid #1)

12. The confidence from never making any huge mistakes(pre-college)

13. The outfit I wore on second date with hub. It was a cute cotton crop top and skirt/shorts(very short), pink striped and size 4(34-24-34). Oh yeah. I want to have all my wisdom and experience but with my much younger body.

14. My optimism.

Reasons To Lock Teenagers in The Attic

Disclaimer: Of course I am not serious about locking your teens in the attic! I personally find the dungeon much more effective! ;)

1. If they say "What--ev--er" in that tone of voice one more time and roll their eyes.

2. If they're very hormonal and have a girl/boy friend and you think they may do something really dumb! Lock them up separately, by the way.

3. They left your gas tank empty AGAIN!

4. They left the volume on the radio in the car as high as it can go and almost gave you a heart attack right there in your driveway.

5. They bring home a friend who has "prison" tats on several areas of his body.

6. They keep nagging you to take them somewhere or to buy them now clothes for school. After your 12th NO, lock 'em up.

7. They just remembered they have 10 books they need to read by Tuesday.

8. They ate all your Crunch and Munch and forget to inform you.

9. They are playing hockey inside the house again, this time they broke your favorite piece of china. This offense may be worthy of two days locked in the dungeon!

10. They haven't showered for 6 days. (This is usually 13 yo boys)

11. They drank your last Coke. (In my house the rule is last Coke is Mom's unless you want a very cranky nasty Mom who's had no caffeine.)

12. They have yet to do their chores after 4 days of asking them to please do their chores.

13. They attempt a coup d'etat against your and your spouse.(This may merit extra punishment. Crush the Revolution while you still have the chance!)

14. They borrowed one of your favorite shirts and brought it home filthy and gross.

15. They tell you at 10pm they need items for a project due at 7am the next morning.

Comments on Comments

Comments from When Did the Apocalypse Happen posted 8/25/10:
Dear Crazed,

No, we haven't all left the building, but I get what you said about most of the bloggers going AWOL. Me, I'm off for a few days and I posted again tonight. I'm working on yet another memory blog. Soon getting to tales of current patients, which is tricky I know.

I'm working 11-7 at the hospital but it's only part-time, which might be a blessing disguised. Then again I'm still real partial to regular meals and paying the bills. So, I think I'll check out an agency & see what kind of jobs they have.

Keep on applying! What did your nursing school say about your lack of offers, besides tut, tut? I know you're going to do a good job wherever you end up. I like the flu shot idea; have you tried the health dept?

Vintage Nurse
Dear Vintage Nurse,
Thanks for commenting, there is LIFE on Blog Earth!!!  What area of the hospital are you working in?  Agencies ADORE nurses with experience, something we recent grads sadly lack.  I will keep applying and have an interview Monday(yeehaw!! ya'll know how much I LIVE for interviews!!!!!!).

and yes, I felt the rapture as well...(the sounds of the wind thru tumbleweeds)
Dear Coopernicus,
Thank you for answering.  Yes, in my heart and sense of humor, Bill the Cat lives though nowhere near as well as Opus lives.  So you whistled through the rapture huh?  We will have to discuss this more some day.

there's something about a woman with an ax....
Dear Cooper,
I have to like a man who appreciates a woman with an ax, especially when the girl was in the Santa Ana Mountains of Orange county, California circe 1979.

When Did The Apocalypse Happen?

HOLY MOLY FRIJOLES! Did everyone get raptured? Did the "big one" happen? Did everyone move to Alaska? Was the entire blog community kidnapped by rampant panty raiding terrorists from the University of Michigan? Has everyone caught the pig flu aka H1N1 and keeled over? Oh wait, the CDC declared the H1N1 pandemic over......did ya catch a new form of bubonic plague when I wasn't looking and migrate to a colony on Molokai, wait, that's Hansen's disease.  Are ya getting MY message? Where the freakin' hell are all the bloggers?!?!?

Well, I suppose I am alone. Odd. Bizarre. Perhaps a migration happens every August 25th and no one told me. Which is ok, because I don't fly. I'm not a Canadian goose. Which is a good thing. Those geese are cranky old birds that poop all over the place. Now aren't you glad I'm NOT a goose from Canada? What? Oh yeah. I'm talking to myself, duh.

I guess this means I can get out as many library books as I want to AND I never have to return them! Yes. There are advantages to being the only person left on earth! Yup. It is nice and quiet. Very quiet. I can only hear the tv, the AC and the Pupples.

Speaking of being the only person left on earth, have ya'll ever seen Survivorman? I think I'm in love(yes, again). The guy eats scorpions, how cool is that? He survived 7 days in the Kalahari Desert with nothing but an old broken down truck and his wits. Damn, he's got lots o' wits. I would never ever(shaking my pretty lil' head NO!) survive 7 HOURS in the desert, let alone an entire week. I don't enjoy breaking a sweat so I'll stay 6000 miles North of the desert, thank you. Survivorman, unlike Bear whats-his-face, does his own camera work and does not have a production crew follow him around.  I hear Bear was almost killed by his camera man, see what happens with a crew?

Anyhoo, this wacky guy, Survivorman, gets dumped in the worst places on earth and he brings his own cameras and films himself purifying his own urine for water in the desert and stealing food from the dogs in Northern Canada, where he's got a dogsled and some fierce dogs, that's it. Holy cow, this man must be insane. Freakin A crazeeeee! Now he's let the dogs go, because they are smart enough to take care of themselves. Something Survivorman must lack as he ends up alone and without shelter. I bet He'd really like to find a Canadian goose right about now...HA! haha. OK so I crack myself up. Something wrong with that? Huh? I didn't think so.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey, maybe you are all abducted by aliens? Is everyone living in Mexico now? Heehee. That was a pretty good one too. Snerk. Habla espanol? Me neither. But I bet Survivorman does.......................

Feeling Bitchy

Summer 1979
I could be a deadly bitch with that pick ax, now couldn't I???

Besides the heat, the males I live with, the friends of the males I live with, I'm not exactly sure why I'm feeling bitchy and cranky.

Much more than usual.  It could be the medications I've been forced to stop using.  It could be the supplements I've been forced to stop taking because I have no money.

It could be I'm pissed about getting old.  Getting old just sucks.  Aches and pains.  Lack of tolerance for idiotic behavior by my family.  My family that lives i the house with me, not my family I never see.  Hard to get irritated by people that aren't really in my life.

Could be I detest when everything seems to be sucking.

Maybe I'm embracing my inner bitch.  I do not let myself do that very often, not out loud.

The moronic neighbor child who's riding a mini-bike up and down the street 6000 in the past 2 hours isn't helping the crankiness either.  Or the crazy paranoid neighbor who watched me walk to the mailbox to get the mail today.  Find something else to watch you psycho!!

I don't know.  Be glad you don't live in the same house with me tonight!!!!!

Nothing to Talk About

Not much going on here.  Big surprise huh?!?

It was extremely hot, then it was lovely and cool, and not it's going back to 85 degrees (or higher) for the next two days.  Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, I don't know how my heart takes all the excitement.

I've applied for a few jobs but almost every job asks for a year of experience.  I might pick up some flu shot/wellness clinic work in the fall.

I haven't been blogging because aren't we all tired of the no job, no money, I'm depressed about it posts.  Hey, I was even boring myself.

Both boys have working on their cars.  One side of the garage still has parts of K's car all over it.  Can I say that guys and their cars and the whole racing thing is stupid?  Stupid.  Yup.  (I'm talking guys in their teens and twenties mostly)  My boys spend over 50% of their money on car stuff.  YAWN!

My spouse and my boys can talk cars for freakin' hours.  I guess I did not raise intellectuals.  Not that car people can't be intellectual, just my intellectual DNA missed my kids.  Completely flew right by them!  PHEWWWWWWWWWWW!  There it went.

My boys don't read.  Perhaps because they have cell phones, computers, iPods.....

I still cannot believe a child of mine is joining the military during a war.  It must be all the war games on computer and Xbox because I never taught either boy that war is a good thing.

No one ever explained that my kids would become their own people.  Dang it.

Dignity Through Dementia

originally post April 2009

When I was doing days at the hospital(we'll be there evenings all quarter this time)I was placed in the geropsych unit from time to time.

The geropsych floor is for folks usually in the late 50's to their 90's. Folks are sent in for a consult visit when they become overly cranky, acting newly demented, or need med adjustments. It's not like
One Flies Over the Cuckoos Nest but it has it's moments.

(These "patients" are combined from many and no identifying info is disclosed as per Federal HIPPA laws. That acronym probably has an extra or missing letter I can't remember.)

The doors to this unit are locked down because folks who are mentally ill or demented or on a temporary diagnostic visit try to leave. A lot. Some try all day long.

Nope, they cannot do that. We just don't let the mentally confused walk out the door for their own safety.

Some of the patients want to leave. They have no idea where they want to go but they go for the exits any time some one leaves or enters. I have learned to enter quickly and to make sure I don't knockdown a patient hovering by the door.

There are patents who walk around for hours trying to figure out how to get back to their home. They might not even know what they are doing. They just know this isn't their normal habitat. I feel bad for these folks except I know they are there for a good reason. If they have some form of dementia they cannot comprehend why they are there and what happened to their family.

I have had lovely conversations with folks who think it's 1955. I have had experiences with folks who are very clear in the morning but confused at night.

Anyone who comes to the geropsych floor is treated with dignity even if they are screaming at me to call the cops, someone kidnapped them!

Each and every patient was, as some point, a beloved baby, some one's sweet little sister, a mother who raised her children with care, a man who fought for our country...you get my drift. Because they have no control of their brain degenerating is no reason to treat them poorly or as a child.

It tugs my heart when a patient asks me when is the bus coming to pick them up, as they wait in the imaginary bus station.

Some patients seem mentally altered when they have a urinary tract infection, a medication level that's slightly off, simple dehydration or a gazillion other reasons. The elderly manifest symptoms differently that the younger generation.

You'd be amazed at how agitated some are when they come in and are perfectly lucid by the time they leave. It's incredible when that happens.

Try Something New

repost from 2008

It's Monday and I'm sure you're thrilled to be awake and ready to get the new week moving. Ayup. We all adore Mondays! Yes, I am always this sarcastic so early in the morning. :P

Let's try something different this week. It would be fabulous if each of us could make the effort to help one person in the next five days.

This doesn't have to be inconvenient. Or difficult. It could be as simple as holding the door for the person behind you.

Or picking up a piece of litter and putting it on the garbage.

I'm not asking for ya'll to join Habitat for Humanity and go build a house in Arkansas, though I'd be damn impressed if you did! Heck yeah I would! If you join the Peace Corps I promise to write you every week you're in the jungles of Nicaragua! And I'll save all my change to send you each month. Smile. Really, I will!(nodding my head)

I think most of us forget that little, tiny gestures can make some one else's day better.

Say hello and smile as you walk by another person.

Remember every person is human and appreciates kindness as much as you do.

Say thank you. Or Please. Or ask if you can help.

I was talking to one of the staff, at our math building on campus after I held the door open for her last week. She was astonished I was holding the door open for her because no one ever did that.

I said My mama taught me manners. We then discussed how few of the younger students ever said please or thank you or held the door. They are so self-centered and in their own little worlds they don't think of others.

I'd love to know my friends here are better people than that. Just give a little bit of yourself to someone in need, even your own child on a hectic day. Or your spouse after a long day at work.

Me? I'm going to try and be pleasant to my 21yo no matter how he acts. I will allow people in line that are waiting to leave the parking lot after class. I will open doors, say please and thank you, and smile at others even if they think I'm some happy kook.

One of my favorite things to do is to pay for the person behind me in line's coffee. Usually at a drive through so it's anonymous and kinda fun. Giving really is fun.

Try it and then come back and tell me what happened. You can do it. Just give a little bit of yourself. You'll feel good. Really good

Days that I Miss???(Teenager Life)

...when you politely remind your 16yo it's time to be off the computer, he sneers and throws his headphones off the table. Dramatic? Hell, yeah. (Where's the Emmy Nominating Committee?)

...when you suggest maybe his headaches are not just post concussive syndrome but could be related to computer usage times..."You have no idea what you're talking about! You're hurting my head more!"(He guessed my evil plan, shucks.)

...your 19yo is all about being independent until he comes down with a nasty case of strep and decides to wake you at 7:30a.m. Sunday morning to let you know it's worse. You cannot imagine my exhileration about the fact he still needs me. Yah. Shore.

...waiting in the Urgent Care Sunday morning with 30 other sick people. Having taken microbiology I am acutely aware of the exponential rates bacteria grows at. I wanted to get up and bleach everyone! It took all my will power not to do this.

...trying to monitor 19yo's use of vicodin, I think most of ya know the~if one pill's good then 3 must be awesome school of thought.

...the sound of stomping feet at least once a day.

...loud, racist, sexist, foul mouthed rap music until you insist he turn it off or put his headphones on. The look that could slice me into pieces is a priceless teenager skill.

...crude comments. Girls. farts, commercials, you name it they can make a crude comment about it. It's special boy teenager talent.

...random outbursts of misdirected anger 5-7 times a week. Isn't he so cute when he's angry? NOT, KNOT, NOTT.

...having every comment you make argued with/against.

...a constant issue of missing food. I go to look for something and POOF! it's gone.

...the never ending sound of texting and/or vibrating phones.

...they only listen when they want to, oh wait! That's all males, isn't it? My Bad.

...they are always somewhere you want to be, ie. the one bathroom, the kitchen table, in the same house. You toddlers mommys think you have no alone time? Neither do the mothers of teens w/o driver's licenses.

...the pungent aroma of AX shower gel. (No girl with smell receptors could like this crap.)

...the pungent aroma of feet, among other things.

...Random accusations. "Did you take my _________? I can't find and I know I put it here, what did you do with it?" Are you kidding son? I don't clean anywhere! Even for you!

...that vacant stare when they have their iPods on or they just woke up.
